Description
Although slow to get off the starting blocks, Argentina has huge and exciting potential: a wide array of grape varieties thanks to the many Europeans who emigrated there from the 16th century onwards, ideal viticultural conditions and particularly high vineyards that can produce world-class, fine wine.

Tittarelli is made purely from Argentina's flagship red grape - Malbec - which has received enormous praise over the last few years. "Argentinian Malbec is the best in the world" wrote The Independent, while the renowned American critic Robert Parker said "By 2015 the greatness of Argentinian wines made from the Malbec grape will be understood as a given."

Best known in Bordeaux, but also a favourite in other areas of southwest France, this variety can be particularly tannic in its homeland. In the warmth of South America, however, it really shines, retaining all its rich black fruit and spice, with little of its hard-edged character.

This is a special wine put together for us by winemaker Graciella Reta, who was also responsible for the Trophy-winning Tempranillo at the 2008 'Wines of Argentina' awards. She is in charge of winemaking at a top cellar in Mendoza, founded in 1915 by Don Enrico Tittarelli. He was just a boy of 17, a poor labourer from Ancona in Italy, who emigrated to Mendoza in the hope of a better future.

Over a third of the wine comprises her top Reserva Malbec, which is particularly weighty and has been aged in cask.
