Description
Italian-born Bonarda is currently the hippest variety on the block in Argentina after Malbec, with its dark, sumptuous and tantalising character. According to The Guardian Weekend, it "is a secret weapon when it comes to vivacious reds … in Argentina (it) becomes lusher and more glossy." It can be characterised by its aromas of blackberry, pomegranate and sweet tobacco, with a good balance of acidity and tannins that enhance its light to medium-bodied structure. There is often a hint of forest fruits and dark treacle on the finish.

This variety has found its niche in the far off, mountain-ringed Famatina Valley of La Rioja, northwest of Mendoza and the San Juan regions. There the vines benefit from long sunshine hours, cool, dry nights, plentiful irrigation from pure Andean snow-melt and high altitudes. This guarantees a superb fruit intensity, and wines of real depth.

The Trading Post was crafted by the talented winemaking specialist, Dr Rodolfo Griguol, at La Riojana, one of the leading wineries of the area, also boasting 'Fairtrade status'. Rodolfo believes that wine should develop its own personality with as little intervention as possibly - he even lets sheep take care of grazing the grass beneath the vines!

A small portion of Cabernet Sauvignon added to the Bonarda in this wine lends an extra boost of blackcurrant character. The wine is named after the area from where the grapes were sourced, which was former trading post country.

I have mixed feelings about Argentinian wines but ... Dr L Esteves, Devon
I have mixed feelings about Argentinian wines but this one is a good surprise. Very complex and with a long lasting taste that for me is more of blackberries (although the labels says it is raspberries and redcurrants). It goes really well with strong cheese or red meat. - Dr L Esteves, Devon - 27/07/2008 12:40:36

Won this wine in a raffle, so didn't expect too ... Mr P J Stockford, Monmouthshire
Won this wine in a raffle, so didn't expect too much, but what a pleasant surprise. It's a smooth red, with a full fruity flavour, and it sits on the palate like a melting snowflake. There's no bitter aftertaste or any of those things that can let a cheaper wine down; it's delicious and at a price that doesn't give it credit. I wholly recommend this wine, and have just bought a dozen bottles to prove it. Dated 2nd May 2008. - Mr P J Stockford, Monmouthshire - 02/05/2008 19:38:10
