"Recognise this?" asked one of our young guns in the tasting room the other day. "It's oaky" I said, supple too with lots of fruit. Decent Bordeaux Merlot-Cabernet from a ripe year?" I ventured. Well, I was right on the grapes, spot on with the oak … but this is about half the price and from Bulgaria!

Things have moved on a bit since I brought the UK's first cases from this part of the world 30 years ago. Back then it was winemakers fighting against crazy rules from Party HQ, sinister characters straight out of a Le Carré novel … but very tasty, if simple, wines.

It comes from the Thracian Plain, way down in the sun-baked south … so that explains the ripeness I tasted.
