Description
Pillastro is made by Angelo and Assunta Maci. Their multi Gold-medal estate is in the hot heel of Puglia, Primitivo's heartland … and such is the passion, skill and commitment of this dynamic husband-and-wife team that they have been named Southern Italy's Winery of the Year - two years running.
With its plentiful sunshine and well-established plantings of indigenous grape varieties, Puglia, was well placed for the winemaking revolution that has occurred there in recent years. The Times wrote "Puglia is one of Italy's prime new-wave wine sources, delivering terrific value for money", and Anthony Rose of The Independent notes "Puglia contains a rich stock of interesting native reds, with Negroamaro and Primitivo showing the best potential".
Angelo made this wine purely from Primitivo, which is more commonly known as Zinfandel in the States. In the heat of Italy's deep south, it produces fantastically rich, powerful reds with plenty of ripe fruit. Angelo chose to mature the wine in oak before release, allowing the flavours to integrate, and adding notes of spice and vanilla.
We've been championing Pillastro for a number of vintages, and now the rest of the world is beginning to catch up. This vintage won a Silver at Belgium's premier wine competition, while the cellar won a Special Prize at Vinitaly for the winery with the highest medal tally in the whole of Italy!
